Dragon name generator with titles and lairs

Twenty dragon names per click. Each name blends an opening with rare, sharp letters and a long ending, then adds a title or a lair. Choose grim, noble, ancient or comic for a terror, a wise guardian, something older than the mountains, or a very small dragon with a large opinion of itself.

The words are written by hand for dragon names, not scraped. Pressing Generate runs the same seeded routine that built the names above, so the same seed always gives the same list.

    Naming guide for your dragon

A dragon's name should sound like nothing else in the setting, so this list is built on letters the other generators on this site hardly use: x, z, y, v and the th sound. A short name is an opening and an ending, Vor plus ath for Vorath, Zeph plus ixar for Zephixar. A long name puts a vowel bridge between an opening and a harder ending, Kaz plus ela plus thrix for Kazelathrix. The long form is the dragon's full name and the short form is what terrified villagers call it.

Almost no dragon goes by a bare name. A title follows it, the Patient, the Devourer, the Sun-crowned, and the title is the dragon's reputation in two words. Choose it by mood: grim titles are what survivors say, noble ones are what a dragon that keeps its bargains is called, ancient ones belong to creatures that were asleep when the first kingdom was founded.

A lair is the other anchor: of the Molten Caldera, of the Verdigris Deeps. It tells players where to go and roughly what the dragon breathes. Titles such as Warden of the Glass Spires work as a name by themselves when nobody alive knows the real one. The comic mood is for hatchlings, pets and the dragon who collects spoons.

    Questions

How do I get a name that matches a dragon's colour or element?

Type the colour or element into the include-my-word box. It is used in the title, as in The Cobalt Wyrm or Tyrant of the Cobalt Spires. You can also lock a lair word such as Molten, Frozen or Sulphur and re-roll the rest.

Some names are hard to say. What then?

Use the short form: set the number of words to one and the longest name to about nine characters. Dragon names are meant to be strange, but if you cannot say one twice, your players will rename the dragon for you.

Can I use these for wyverns, drakes or other monsters?

Yes. The kind-of-dragon list includes Wyrm, Drake and Serpent, and the blended names suit any large, old creature.

Are these names from a particular game?

No. The syllable lists were written for this site and avoid the well-known dragons of books, films and games. A blend can still coincide with an existing name, so search before publishing.
