How these kingdom names are built

The patterns can combine into up to 2,271,336 different names before filters. Every name in the list shows the pattern behind it, so you can see why it reads the way it does.

The words are written by hand for kingdom names, not scraped. Pressing Generate runs the same seeded routine that built the names above, so the same seed always gives the same list.
Naming guide for your kingdom
A kingdom is older and wider than any hill or river in it, so its name is rarely a plain description. This generator builds an invented root instead. An opening syllable such as Bren, Thal or Cyr is joined to an ending such as mark, wald, ovia or eth, sometimes with a short middle syllable between them: Bren plus mark is Brenmark, Thal plus an plus eth is Thalaneth. The endings carry a faint meaning. Mark and reach suggest a border, wald a forest, holm an island, mere a lake.
Around the root goes a title, and the title is politics. A kingdom has a crown, a duchy answers to somebody, a march is a militarised frontier, a league or a compact is a bargain between equals, a protectorate did not get a choice. Changing the title while keeping the root is the quickest way to give two neighbours a history: the Duchy of Corwald was once part of the Kingdom of Corwald, and both remember.
The moods change the describing words. Noble gives the names courts give themselves, grim the names left after a war, ancient the names on maps nobody trusts, and wild the frontier marches named after frost, thorn and wolf. Comic is for the tiny, bankrupt or disputed state every campaign needs once.
Before you commit to a name
- Say the name aloud twice. If you stumble, your players or readers will too, and a name nobody can say gets replaced by a nickname.
- Check that it does not sound like another name already in your campaign or story. Two places that start with the same letter and end the same way get mixed up at the table.
- Search the web for it. The names are built from this site's own word and syllable lists, but a random blend can match a name from a published book, game or setting by chance. If it does, pick another.
- If you plan to publish or sell your work, treat the name like any other: you are responsible for checking it is not a trademark or a well-known name from someone else's world.
- Write it on the map or the character sheet and read it small. Long names get shortened in play, so check that the short form also works.
Questions
How are the invented kingdom names put together?
From three lists on this page: openings, middles and endings. The pattern shown beside each name tells you which were used. A two-part name is an opening plus an ending; a three-part name adds a middle syllable for a longer, grander sound.
How do I get neighbouring realms that sound related?
Lock the ending. Open Lock a word on a name you like, press the ending, and generate again: the new batch keeps it, so you get a family such as Brenmark, Ostmark and Jormark. Locking the opening instead gives rival branches of one house.
Can I use my own root, such as a dynasty name?
Yes. Type it into the include-my-word box. It is placed after a title, as in Duchy of Halcyon, or joined to an ending, as in Halcyonmark.
Which title should a small state have?
Barony, earldom and march suit a state a party can ride across in a few days. Empire, dominion and commonwealth imply many peoples under one rule. Set the number of words to one if you want the bare root and plan to add the title yourself.
