How these weapon names are built

The patterns can combine into up to 757,032 different names before filters. Every name in the list shows the pattern behind it, so you can see why it reads the way it does.

Naming guide for your weapon
The classic name for a legendary weapon is a single compound word, and it is the main recipe here: a force joined to an ending. The force says what the weapon carries with it, such as grief, ember, gale or gloom. The ending says what it does: a song is heard, a cleaver or a splitter cuts, a bane ends something, a vow binds. Gale plus song is Galesong, which sounds like a light, fast blade; Gloom plus cleaver sounds like something nobody wants to meet.
The second family names the weapon after a person. Kethra's Glaive is an heirloom, and the first question a player asks is who Kethra was, so have an answer ready. The third family is the title, a kind of weapon and a legend: Spear of Seven Winters, Axe of the Drowned. Titles suit weapons found in tombs, where the name is carved on a wall and the story has to be pieced together.
Moods change the describing words and add their own forms. Grim weapons weep and thirst, noble ones are just and oathbound, ancient ones were entombed with their owners, arcane ones hum and flicker. The comic mood gives you a wielder's spare mace and a slightly bent sword, which are right for a first magic item that is more trouble than it is worth.
Before you commit to a name
- Say the name aloud twice. If you stumble, your players or readers will too, and a name nobody can say gets replaced by a nickname.
- Check that it does not sound like another name already in your campaign or story. Two places that start with the same letter and end the same way get mixed up at the table.
- Search the web for it. The names are built from this site's own word and syllable lists, but a random blend can match a name from a published book, game or setting by chance. If it does, pick another.
- If you plan to publish or sell your work, treat the name like any other: you are responsible for checking it is not a trademark or a well-known name from someone else's world.
- Write it on the map or the character sheet and read it small. Long names get shortened in play, so check that the short form also works.
Questions
Does it only make sword names?
No. The weapon list has 28 kinds, from daggers and longbows to mauls and tridents. Lock the weapon word you need and re-roll. The one-word compounds, such as Emberclaw or Rimeshard, do not name a weapon type at all and fit anything with an edge or a point.
How do the compound names work?
Each joins one word from the force list to one ending from the compound-ending list, both shown on this page. Lock the half you like and generate again to hear it with every partner.
Can I name a weapon after a character or a villain?
Yes. Type the name into the include-my-word box. It is used as the wielder, as in Cairn's Halberd, as the first half of a compound, as in Cairnbane, or in a title.
How do I avoid a name that already belongs to a famous weapon?
The lists were written to stay clear of well-known ones, but compounds are short and some will exist somewhere. Search for the name before you use it in anything you publish.
